Personalized Play Therapy sessions to help your Goals.
Play Therapy at Serenity Counseling
Play Therapy is a developmentally appropriate form of counseling that allows children to express their thoughts, feelings, and experiences through play — their natural language. Using toys, art, sand trays, puppets, and creative activities, children can safely process emotions, build coping skills, and work through challenges in a supportive environment.
At Serenity Counseling Services, our specially trained play therapist creates a warm, safe space tailored to each child’s unique needs. We gently guide the process while observing patterns in play, helping children develop emotional regulation, resilience, and healthier ways of relating to themselves and others. When desired by families, we can also incorporate faith-based values such as hope, identity, and God’s love into the therapeutic journey.
Play therapy is especially effective for children ages 3–12 who are experiencing anxiety, behavioral difficulties, trauma, grief, family changes, social struggles, or emotional outbursts. Through this gentle, engaging approach, children often show improvements in confidence, communication, emotional expression, and overall well-being.
If your child is struggling to put their feelings into words, play therapy offers a powerful, natural pathway toward healing and growth.

How Play Therapy Works / What to Expect at Serenity
When your child begins play therapy at Serenity Counseling Services, the process typically starts with an initial parent consultation, called an intake session, with parents or caregivers. During this session, we discuss your child’s history, concerns, strengths, and goals for counseling.
After the initial consultation, your child will begin regular play therapy counseling sessions in a specially designed play therapy room. This space is carefully arranged with therapeutic toys and materials that encourage expression, creativity, and emotional processing.
During sessions, children engage in play activities while the therapist observes, supports, and gently guides the therapeutic process. Over time, the child begins to explore emotions, process experiences, and develop healthier ways to cope with challenges.
Parents are an important part of the process. Periodic parent support and coaching sessions (parent check-ins) allow us to discuss progress, provide support, and offer strategies to help reinforce growth at home.
Our goal at Serenity Counseling Services is to provide a safe, nurturing environment where children feel understood, supported, and empowered to grow.

Benefits of Play Therapy
Play therapy offers many emotional and developmental benefits for children. Through the therapeutic play process, children may:
- Improve emotional expression and communication
- Develop healthy coping skills
- Increase self-confidence and resilience
- Reduce anxiety, stress, or behavioral difficulties
- Improve problem-solving and social skills
- Process difficult experiences or transitions
- Strengthen relationships with parents and caregivers
Because play therapy meets children where they are developmentally, it often helps them engage more comfortably in the counseling process. Research shows that play therapy for children can significantly improve emotional regulation, behavioral functioning, and family relationships when guided by a trained therapist.

Who Play Therapy Is For
Play therapy is designed primarily for children ages 3–12, though older children may also benefit from creative and expressive therapy approaches.
Parents may consider play therapy if their child is experiencing:
- Anxiety or excessive worry
- Behavioral challenges at home or school
- Difficulty adjusting to changes such as divorce, relocation, or family transitions
- Grief or loss
- Trauma or stressful experiences
- Social difficulties or friendship struggles
- Emotional outbursts, withdrawal, or mood changes
- Low self-esteem or confidence
Sometimes children cannot easily explain what they are feeling, but their behavior may signal that they need support. Play therapy provides a safe way for children to work through those emotions and experiences.

What age is play therapy appropriate for?
Play therapy is most commonly used with children ages 3–12, though elements of play and creative expression can benefit older children as well.
How long does play therapy take?
The length of therapy varies depending on each child’s needs and goals. Some children benefit from short-term support, while many need longer-term therapy to work through more complex challenges.
Do parents participate in the sessions?
Most play therapy sessions are conducted one-on-one with the child, allowing them to freely express themselves. However, parents play an important role through check-in meetings where progress and strategies for supporting the child at home are discussed
How is play therapy different from regular play?
While it may look like regular play, play therapy is guided by a trained therapist who uses specific techniques to help children process emotions, develop coping skills, and work through challenges.
What kinds of issues can play therapy help with?
Play therapy can help children deal with anxiety, behavioral concerns, trauma, grief, family changes, school difficulties, and many other emotional, behavioral, or developmental challenges.
Do parents participate in the sessions?
Progress may show up in different ways, such as improved behavior, better emotional expression, increased confidence, or healthier coping skills. Your therapist will provide updates and discuss progress during parent check-ins.
What if my child is shy or reluctant to participate?
Many children feel unsure about counseling at first. The playroom environment is designed to help children feel comfortable and safe, allowing trust to build naturally over time.
